President Trump on Monday directed Education Secretary Linda McMahon to begin dismantling the U.S. Department of Education, following a Supreme Court ruling that allows the administration to resume agency layoffs. Trump hailed the 6-3 decision as a “major victory” for parents and students, claiming it will return education power “back to the people.”
The ruling lifts a lower court injunction that had blocked Trump’s plan to eliminate half the department’s staff and shift some responsibilities, such as student loan oversight, to other federal agencies. A previous ruling by U.S. District Judge Myong Joun said Trump lacked authority without congressional approval.
Though the decision allows the administration to move forward for now, the case will continue in lower courts. The majority provided no written opinion, while all three Democratic-appointed justices dissented, calling the move “indefensible.”
