Former President Donald Trump has expressed strong support for Louisiana’s new law requiring the Ten Commandments to be prominently displayed in classrooms from elementary schools to colleges. Trump declared on Truth Social, “I LOVE THE TEN COMMANDMENTS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, PRIVATE SCHOOLS, AND MANY OTHER PLACES, FOR THAT MATTER. READ IT — HOW CAN WE, AS A NATION, GO WRONG??? THIS MAY BE, IN FACT, THE FIRST MAJOR STEP IN THE REVIVAL OF RELIGION, WHICH IS DESPERATELY NEEDED, IN OUR COUNTRY.” He added, “BRING BACK TTC!!!”

The law, signed by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, a Republican, faced no resistance in the state’s GOP-controlled Legislature. However, it has sparked significant controversy and legal challenges. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Freedom From Religion Foundation criticized the law as “blatantly unconstitutional” and pledged to challenge it in court.

The Biden administration has not commented on the new law or Trump’s remarks. President Biden, a practicing Catholic, has also not publicly addressed the issue.

Critics argue that the law infringes on the separation of church and state. The ACLU, joined by Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the Freedom from Religion Foundation, stated, “Politicians have no business imposing their preferred religious doctrine on students and families in public schools.”
