The assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump has reinforced a sense of unity among Republicans heading to the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. “Delegates will go to the RNC feeling a duty to protect President Trump and the values he fights for,” said Niraj Antani, a Republican Ohio state senator and convention delegate.
The attempt, carried out by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, resulted in one death and two injuries. Trump-endorsed Miami-Dade County Commissioner Kevin Cabrera emphasized the event’s impact on unifying support for Trump.
Though security around the convention has tightened, it’s unclear how much programming will change. A prayer vigil for Trump was scheduled in Milwaukee. An RNC spokesperson did not return a request for comment.
“Emotions are high,” said Illinois RNC National Committeeman Richard Porter, adding that the party’s resolve remains strong. Speakers are advised to maintain their original plans and project confidence.
Trump campaign officials went into a “communications lockdown” following the shooting. Trump expressed gratitude on Truth Social, stating, “We will FEAR NOT, but instead remain resilient in our Faith and Defiant in the face of Wickedness.”
Leora Levy, giving the convention’s benediction, hopes for unity, while Ohio Sen. JD Vance linked the attack to political rhetoric against Trump.
