President-elect Donald Trump announced former ICE Director Tom Homan as the “border czar” for his upcoming administration, tasked with overseeing the Southern and Northern borders, maritime, and aviation security. Trump’s statement on Truth Social emphasized Homan’s role in directing deportations, saying, “There is nobody better at policing and controlling our Borders.”
With a strong immigration focus, Trump has pledged to carry out the largest deportation effort in U.S. history. He plans to work with local police, though specifics on cost and logistical challenges remain unclear. Other planned executive actions include reinstating border wall construction and reviving the “Remain in Mexico” policy for asylum seekers. Trump also plans an executive order to end birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants, a move certain to face legal opposition.
Homan, a vocal supporter of Trump’s policies, previously served as ICE director during Trump’s first term. In a recent interview, Homan dismissed concerns over family separations, stating, “Families can be deported together.”
