President-elect Donald Trump has requested the Supreme Court to block his sentencing in the hush money case, set for Friday. His legal team filed the appeal Wednesday after a New York appeals court denied delaying the sentencing. Trump’s lawyers argue the Supreme Court must prevent a “grave injustice” that undermines the presidency.
Citing a previous ruling granting presidents broad immunity for official acts, they assert Trump, as president-elect, is shielded from prosecution. His attorneys also claim the case is politically motivated, violated due process, and lacks merit.
Prosecutors must submit a response by Thursday. On Tuesday, an appeals judge rejected Trump’s emergency request without explanation. The case judge has stated Trump will not face jail time, fines, or probation even if sentenced.
