Shortly after his inauguration, President Donald Trump confirmed the U.S. would withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, a decision reminiscent of his first term. A memo to Republican lawmakers stated, “President Trump will withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord.”

The withdrawal process, as in 2017, will take time to finalize. The 2015 accord, signed under President Obama, involves nearly 200 nations aiming to limit global temperature increases to 1.5°C above preindustrial levels. Once completed, the U.S. and Iran will be the only major greenhouse gas emitters outside the agreement.

Former EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy criticized the move, calling it a failure to protect public health and national security. She urged states, cities, and businesses to continue leading clean energy efforts.

The announcement marks the first of many planned reversals of Biden-era climate policies by the Trump administration.
