Former President Donald Trump met with Polish President Andrzej Duda at Trump Tower in New York City on Wednesday. During his first term, Trump enjoyed a strong rapport with Duda, who has been an advocate for supporting Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia. This meeting occurs while Trump is in New York for his ongoing criminal trial.

Duda, recognized for his right-wing populist stance, has consistently pushed the U.S. to increase its support for Ukraine. He visited the White House in February to commemorate Poland’s 25th anniversary as a NATO member, an event marked with President Joe Biden. Historically, Duda and Trump shared a favorable relationship, highlighted by Duda’s proposal to name a Polish military base after Trump.

Trump, known for his “America First” foreign policy, has expressed skepticism regarding the extent of U.S. aid to Ukraine and has urged European nations to take on a larger role in supporting Kyiv. He has also stirred concerns among NATO members with his ambiguous stance on the alliance’s collective defense obligations, notably stating at a rally that he would not necessarily defend a NATO ally if they failed to meet defense spending requirements.

In addition to his meeting with Duda, Trump has recently engaged with other international leaders, including Hungarian President Viktor Orbán and British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, and has had discussions with Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
