The Trump and Harris campaigns are at odds over whether microphones should be muted during their upcoming debate, leading former President Trump to question his participation. The Trump campaign favors muting each candidate’s microphone when it’s not their turn to speak, a rule used during Trump’s June debate with President Biden. In contrast, the Harris campaign insists both microphones should remain live throughout the debate.
Harris spokesperson Brian Fallon criticized the Trump team’s preference for muted microphones, suggesting they doubt Trump’s ability to maintain a presidential demeanor without interruptions. Fallon stated, “Trump should stop hiding behind the mute button.” Meanwhile, Trump adviser Jason Miller accused the Harris campaign of seeking unfair advantages and attempting to avoid a debate.
The disagreement over microphone rules has sparked uncertainty about whether the Sept. 10 debate, set to be hosted by ABC News in Philadelphia, will proceed as planned. Trump has also expressed concerns about ABC’s coverage, further casting doubt on his participation.
