ABC News announced that former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have agreed to the rules for their first debate on Sept. 10. This will be the first debate since President Biden dropped out of the race in July.
One of the key points of contention was whether microphones should remain live during the opponent’s speaking time. Harris’s team advocated for keeping mics unmuted, but ABC confirmed microphones will be muted when it’s the other candidate’s turn to speak, following the same rules from a previous CNN debate.
The debate will be moderated by ABC’s David Muir and Linsey Davis at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, without an audience. The 90-minute event will include two commercial breaks and no opening statements. Trump won a coin flip and chose to give the last closing statement, while Harris selected her preferred podium position.
Each candidate will have two minutes to answer questions, followed by two minutes for rebuttals and one additional minute for follow-ups. Candidates are barred from asking each other questions. They will be provided pens, paper, and water but no prewritten notes or props.
