Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) announced Thursday that the FBI will assist in locating Texas Democratic lawmakers who fled the state to block a quorum on a Republican-led redistricting proposal.
“I am proud to announce that Director Kash Patel has approved my request for the FBI to assist state and local law enforcement in locating runaway Texas House Democrats,” Cornyn said in a statement, thanking President Donald Trump for backing the move.
The Democratic lawmakers left Texas last week and are reportedly in blue states such as New York, Illinois, and Massachusetts. Their departure halted progress on GOP-proposed maps expected to favor Republicans in five new House districts after 2026.
Trump supported Cornyn’s call, stating, “You can’t just sit it out. You have to go back, you have to fight it out.” He added that both the governor and attorney general of Texas are demanding the lawmakers return.
Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) escalated the matter, filing an emergency petition to remove Rep. Gene Wu and others from office for abandoning the session. Meanwhile, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) pledged a special election to advance Democrat-friendly maps in response.
