President-elect Donald Trump and allies criticized President Joe Biden’s border policies following a deadly New Orleans truck attack, despite the attacker being a U.S. citizen. Trump, citing early, incorrect reports, linked the attack to migrants, saying Biden’s border policies have caused a “violent erosion of Safety.”

Fox News initially reported the attacker crossed the border from Mexico, later correcting that Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the suspect, was a U.S.-born Army veteran. Trump and several Republicans, including Donald Trump Jr. and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, repeated the misinformation before the clarification.

Other GOP members used the incident to push for stricter border security, with House Speaker Mike Johnson emphasizing risks from alleged terrorist cells. Data from NBC News shows only 0.014% of migrants attempting border crossings during fiscal year 2024 were on the terrorist watchlist, a figure comparable to the Trump era.
