President Trump and MAGA allies who long denounced “cancel culture” are now backing aggressive measures to punish critics of Charlie Kirk following his assassination. The shift highlights how free speech debates have turned as grief over Kirk’s killing fuels demands for consequences.
The Charlie Kirk Data Foundation claims to have logged more than 60,000 names of people accused of mocking or criticizing Kirk online. Federal workers, military members, and private employees have faced firings after being identified by conservative activists or Cabinet officials. Some businesses and sports teams have also been criticized for declining to honor Kirk with flag-lowering ceremonies or moments of silence.
Vice President JD Vance, guest-hosting a memorial edition of The Charlie Kirk Show, urged supporters to “call out” and report anyone celebrating Kirk’s death. The State Department has begun revoking visas of immigrants tied to such posts, while House Republicans filed resolutions to strip Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) of committee seats.
Trump has expanded the approach to media and institutions, cutting funding to NPR and PBS, threatening contracts for law firms deemed unfriendly, and pushing an executive order against flag-burning despite constitutional protections. Critics warn the response amounts to enforcing political speech codes under the banner of loyalty.
