President Donald Trump once again declined to rule out an unconstitutional third term on Monday, telling reporters aboard Air Force One that he has “the best poll numbers ever” and would “love to do it.” When pressed on whether he was ruling out another run, Trump replied, “Am I not ruling it out? You’ll have to tell me.”
The comments come days after former White House strategist Steve Bannon told The Economist there was “a plan” for Trump to remain in power beyond the two-term constitutional limit. The 22nd Amendment explicitly bars any individual from being elected president more than twice.
During the flight, Trump also floated a potential future ticket featuring Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, saying that if the two “formed a group, they’d be unstoppable.” He added that his poll numbers were “better than ever,” though independent polling does not support that claim.
While Trump has occasionally framed the idea of a third term as a joke, legal scholars say his repeated suggestions warrant concern. “He’s constitutionally barred — plain and simple,” one constitutional expert told Axios.
Trump has previously mentioned possible “methods” for extending his presidency, such as a successor temporarily holding office and returning power to him, but called that idea “too cute” on Monday.
