Former President Donald Trump stated in a video post that he believes abortion laws should be determined by U.S. state laws. He expressed support for exceptions in cases of rape, incest, and to protect the life of the mother, and reiterated his support for in-vitro fertilization. Trump did not address the issue of a national ban on abortion.

He claimed responsibility for the 2022 Supreme Court decision ending a federal right to abortion, attributing it to his conservative Supreme Court appointments. Trump did not specify a gestational age at which he would support an abortion ban.

Since launching his campaign in late 2022, Trump has largely avoided the topic of abortion. The Republican Party has struggled to articulate a message following the 2022 ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, which was made possible by Trump’s appointment of three conservative justices to the court during his presidency from 2017 to 2021.
