The Trump administration is exploring plans to deport migrants with criminal records from the U.S. to Libya and Rwanda, CNN reported Wednesday. The proposals, still under discussion, would mark a significant escalation in Trump’s immigration strategy, potentially relocating individuals thousands of miles away to countries with limited diplomatic and human rights records.
Officials are also pursuing a potential “safe third country” agreement with Libya that would allow the U.S. to transfer asylum seekers detained at the U.S. border to Libyan territory for processing. Such an agreement would mirror earlier controversial deals made under previous administrations with Central American nations.
These discussions raise human rights concerns, particularly given Libya’s history of instability and migrant abuse. Trump officials argue the move is part of broader efforts to deter illegal migration and reduce the domestic burden on the immigration system.
The administration has not confirmed whether formal negotiations have begun or provided a timeline for possible implementation.
