The Trump administration plans to terminate U.S. funding for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, a global initiative that helps vaccinate children in developing nations against deadly diseases. The $2.6 billion contract cancellation appeared on a whistleblower-provided list of defunded USAID programs recently submitted to Congress.
Gavi, launched in 2000, supports vaccinations for over 1.1 billion children worldwide and targets 20 diseases, including COVID-19, malaria, and HPV. The U.S. is Gavi’s second-largest government donor, contributing 12% of its budget. The Gates Foundation remains the largest private contributor.
According to KFF, U.S. funding has grown from $175 million in 2014 to $300 million in 2024. Gavi warned that the funding loss would significantly impact its operations and vaccine access for low-income countries.
Democrats say the defunding effort stems from Peter Marocco, working under Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency. Public Citizen argues the cut may be illegal, asserting that only Congress can control foreign aid allocations.
Gavi expressed hope the U.S. partnership can continue, citing 18 million lives saved over 25 years.
