New York City’s designation as a “sanctuary city” is under legal threat following a lawsuit filed by the Trump administration. The suit alleges the city’s policies obstruct immigration enforcement and contributed to the recent shooting of an off-duty border patrol agent.
“New York City has released thousands of criminals on the streets to commit violent crimes against law-abiding citizens due to sanctuary city policies,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement. “If New York City won’t stand up for the safety of its citizens, we will.”
The lawsuit claims two individuals in the U.S. illegally ambushed a Customs and Border Protection officer at Fort Washington Park, attempting to rob him and shooting him in the face and leg. One suspect had been previously arrested multiple times and was subject to a federal detainer that local authorities allegedly ignored.
The New York Immigration Coalition responded, noting that the city’s policies bar law enforcement from honoring ICE detainers without judicial warrants but still allow cooperation under legal conditions.
Mayor Eric Adams stated on social media, “The job of a mayor is to protect the safety of every single person in their city,” adding that his office would “review the lawsuit.”
