The Trump administration has offered a $25,000 voluntary separation package to tens of thousands of federal employees at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as part of its government downsizing efforts.
HHS employees, including those at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Food and Drug Administration (FDA), received the offer via email. Workers have until Friday at 5 p.m. to opt in.
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has previously signaled plans for significant staff reductions, particularly at public health agencies. He has been critical of agency decisions, saying some employees “made really bad decisions” regarding nutrition guidelines.
The move comes as the CDC responds to a deadly measles outbreak in West Texas and New Mexico and as Congress debates major Medicaid cuts. The buyouts are part of a broader initiative led by billionaire Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to shrink the federal workforce and cut costs.
HHS has yet to comment on the buyout program.
