The Trump administration launched its first chartered self-deportation flight Monday, transporting 65 migrants from Honduras and Colombia from Houston back to their home countries. Under the new program, unauthorized immigrants who voluntarily leave the U.S. receive a free flight and $1,000 upon arrival.
Promoted through the CBP Home App, the initiative is part of Trump’s broader immigration crackdown, aimed at reducing the number of unauthorized migrants through voluntary departures rather than detention. Those who do not opt in face possible arrest and long-term detention, said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
While some experts like Michelle Brané see the program as potentially beneficial, others question whether migrants are being misled about their future ability to reenter the U.S. legally. Critics warn the effort may be coercive, and advocacy groups argue the laws currently bar most from returning.
This flight marks a shift in Trump’s enforcement strategy, pairing hardline messaging with financial incentives.
