The Trump administration on Monday announced a “comprehensive review” of more than $9 billion in federal funding to Harvard University.
The move comes after the administration canceled $400 million in grants to Columbia University following pro-Palestinian protests on campus. Both institutions have faced scrutiny for alleged failures to address antisemitic incidents after the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon said Harvard’s actions have jeopardized its reputation. “Harvard’s failure to protect students on campus from antisemitic discrimination — all while promoting divisive ideologies over free inquiry — has put its reputation in serious jeopardy,” she said.
The review involves the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services, as well as the U.S. General Services Administration. It includes over $255.6 million in federal contracts and $8.7 billion in grant commitments. Findings will be reported to the Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism.
Officials have not confirmed if Harvard faces the same preconditions for funding reinstatement as Columbia.
