Cornell and Northwestern universities have become the latest institutions to face federal funding freezes under President Donald Trump’s administration. Approximately $1 billion was halted for Cornell and $790 million for Northwestern, reportedly without prior notice from the White House.
The freezes follow Trump’s executive order on combating antisemitism, which previously led to Columbia University losing $400 million in grants. Cornell confirmed receiving over 75 stop work orders from the Department of Defense, impacting research related to national defense and health. Northwestern has not reported official orders but acknowledged concerns about its federally funded projects.
The Departments of Health and Human Services, Education, and General Services Administration are reviewing whether campus protests violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. No public findings have been issued regarding Cornell or Northwestern.
Trump posted on Truth Social that institutions allowing “illegal protests” would lose funding and that students involved could face expulsion or imprisonment. The administration has also targeted diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, prompting changes at institutions including the U.S. Naval Academy.
