The Trump administration has fired Shira Perlmutter, director of the U.S. Copyright Office, just two days after dismissing Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress. Both women had faced criticism from a conservative watchdog group and were removed via official emails from the White House Presidential Personnel Office.

Perlmutter, who was appointed in 2020 under Hayden’s leadership, received notice of her termination Saturday. A spokesperson for the Copyright Office confirmed her departure was “effective immediately.”

Hayden, confirmed in 2016, was the first woman and first African American to lead the Library of Congress. Her firing last week drew significant attention and criticism from Democratic lawmakers.

Both officials were recently targeted by the American Accountability Foundation (AAF), a conservative group that accused them of promoting liberal agendas and called for their ouster. AAF president Tom Jones applauded the firings, saying, “It is time to return an America First agenda to the nation’s intellectual property regulation.”

The White House has not publicly explained the rationale behind the firings, but they are part of a broader pattern of removing career officials viewed as unsupportive of the Trump administration’s ideological priorities.
