The Trump administration has dismissed over 400 employees from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and more than 1,000 from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) as part of a broader effort to reduce the federal workforce.
At DHS, employees were let go from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Officials cited the removal of “non-mission critical personnel in probationary status” and projected $50 million in savings. Notably, Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement were unaffected.
At the VA, layoffs targeted non-mission-critical probationary employees, with the department claiming the move would save $98 million and redirect funds toward healthcare and benefits. However, lawmakers and veterans’ groups fear it will harm services, with Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) warning that VA researchers were among those dismissed.
The cuts align with Trump’s executive order directing agencies to plan for large-scale workforce reductions. Elon Musk, who leads a government efficiency initiative, has advocated for eliminating entire agencies.
