The Trump administration has dismissed nearly 400 scientists working on the congressionally mandated National Climate Assessment, citing a reevaluation of the report’s scope. The decision was announced via email Monday, informing participants they were being released from their roles.

The sixth edition of the report, due in 2027, is a key resource for understanding how climate change impacts the U.S. It informs policy, planning, and preparedness at all levels of government.

The U.S. Global Change Research Program said the reassessment aims to align the process with the law. However, critics argue the move reflects a broader effort to downplay climate science. The White House has also proposed eliminating NOAA’s Oceanic and Atmospheric Research office and canceled related contracts earlier this year.

Climate experts warned the dismissal could hinder local adaptation and mitigation planning, particularly in under-resourced communities.

The decision follows recent staff firings at the USGCRP and is consistent with proposals in “Project 2025,” a conservative policy roadmap advocating for a reshaped climate agenda.

By law, the administration must still produce a report by the end of 2027.
