Former President Donald Trump stated that the surge in drone sightings over New Jersey in late 2024 was either linked to FAA-authorized operations or recreational drone enthusiasts. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the FAA flew drones for research and noted many were operated by hobbyists, adding, “This was not the enemy.”
The sightings drew national attention in late November and December, with drones reported near sensitive military locations, raising concerns about potential security risks. Lawmakers questioned whether foreign adversaries were involved and criticized the Biden administration for a lack of transparency.
Biden officials dismissed these claims, stating the FBI found most drones were lawfully operated or mistaken for other aerial objects, though they acknowledged the need for better systems to counter potential drone threats.
