Former President Donald Trump accused the Justice Department and FBI of minimizing a second assassination attempt on his life, suggesting Florida authorities should take over the investigation. In a statement, Trump criticized the federal agencies for handling the case lightly, alleging political bias due to ongoing legal cases against him, including classified document handling and election-related charges.
Trump pointed to past FBI statements, specifically comments by Director Christopher Wray regarding a previous assassination attempt, which Trump believes were downplayed. Trump argued that the Biden administration’s control over the DOJ and FBI made it impossible to trust their investigation, pushing for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to lead the case instead, claiming state charges would be more severe.
The accused, Ryan Routh, 58, allegedly approached Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course with a rifle. He faces charges for possessing a firearm while a felon and having an obliterated serial number. Florida has opened a concurrent investigation, with further charges expected.
The FBI did not comment, and President Biden’s administration maintains it has no involvement in Trump’s legal investigations. Trump continues to label these cases as politically motivated efforts to hinder his 2024 campaign.
