President Donald Trump sharply criticized Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Sunday, accusing him of encouraging large-scale drug production and announcing an immediate halt to U.S. financial aid and subsidies to Colombia.

“Petro is an illegal drug leader strongly encouraging the massive production of drugs,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, claiming the Colombian president “does nothing to stop it” despite U.S. payments. “As of today, these payments, or any other form of subsidies, will no longer be made to Colombia,” he added.

Trump said narcotics production in Colombia had become the country’s “biggest business,” with drugs fueling “death, destruction, and havoc” across the United States. He warned that if Petro did not act to end the operations, “the United States will close them up for him, and it won’t be done nicely.”

The exchange followed Petro’s accusation that the U.S. committed “murder” during a September strike targeting what Trump called “confirmed narcoterrorists.” Petro claimed a Colombian fisherman, Alejandro Carranza, was wrongfully killed in the attack.

Trump previously said the strike, conducted in international waters, targeted “extraordinarily violent drug trafficking cartels” linked to Venezuela. The growing dispute marks one of the sharpest diplomatic confrontations between Washington and Bogotá in years.
