Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada “won’t back down” from President Donald Trump’s renewed threat to impose a 25% tariff, pledging retaliation until the tariffs are removed.

Speaking to the advisory council on Canada-U.S. relations Friday, Trudeau emphasized Canada’s commitment to border security while making it clear that tariffs would not go unanswered. “If tariffs are implemented against Canada, we will respond,” he said, adding that “everything is on the table.”

Trump first raised the tariff proposal in late 2024, citing unfair trade practices, fentanyl trafficking, and migration concerns. He has since criticized Trudeau and even suggested Canada should become the 51st U.S. state.

Trudeau announced his resignation earlier this month amid tensions with Trump and declining poll numbers ahead of Canada’s elections. Experts warn tariffs could harm both economies, affecting American consumers and long-term trade stability.
