Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed he and President-elect Donald Trump briefly joked about merging Canada with the U.S. during a November meeting at Mar-a-Lago. Trudeau, speaking to Jen Psaki in an MSNBC interview, said the conversation shifted when he joked about trading Vermont or California for parts of Canada, prompting Trump to lose interest.
Trump has floated the idea of Canada becoming the “51st state,” a proposal widely seen as rhetoric aimed at renegotiating economic agreements. Trudeau dismissed the notion but warned of a strong Canadian response if Trump imposes tariffs on Canadian exports. “If he does choose to go forward with tariffs… we’re going to have to have a robust response,” Trudeau stated.
Trump has also expressed interest in acquiring Greenland and reclaiming the Panama Canal, saying military action might be necessary to secure U.S. strategic interests.
