Prime Minister Justin Trudeau defended his work with Donald Trump and emphasized collaboration after Trump proposed a 25% tariff on Canadian goods. Trudeau credited past negotiations on NAFTA with preserving jobs and stressed that tariffs would harm U.S. and Canadian industries. “We created growth across both sides of the border,” he said, urging continued partnership.
Trump linked the tariff plan to border security concerns, citing fentanyl and illegal immigration. Border data shows U.S. northern border fentanyl seizures rose to 19.5 kg this year, with nearly 200,000 migrant encounters, far below the 2.1 million seen at the southern border.
President Joe Biden called the tariff plan “counterproductive” and warned against jeopardizing relations with Canada and Mexico.
