(Washington, D.C.) Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sunday there is no formal proposal to replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA), despite President Donald Trump’s recent social media posts urging Congress to redirect federal healthcare funds directly to citizens.
Speaking on ABC News “This Week,” Bessent told George Stephanopoulos, “We don’t have a formal proposal,” when asked about Trump’s Truth Social statements advocating for an end to what he called “money-sucking insurance companies.” Bessent added that reopening the federal government remains the administration’s priority before entering negotiations over healthcare reforms.
Trump’s Saturday post tied the ACA debate to the ongoing government shutdown, which has stretched nearly six weeks as Senate Democrats push to extend enhanced ACA subsidies expiring this year. Democrats have repeatedly blocked Republican funding bills that exclude the extension, arguing the lapse would sharply raise premiums for millions of Americans.
