Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Sunday said that while the ideas behind the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) remain popular, its former leader Elon Musk is not.
Responding to CNN’s Dana Bash about Musk’s announcement of his new “America Party,” Bessent said, “The principles of DOGE were very popular. I think if you looked at the polling, Elon was not.”
Bessent added that Musk’s political ambitions likely won’t sit well with shareholders of his companies. “I imagine that those boards of directors did not like this announcement yesterday and will be encouraging him to focus on his business activities, not his political activities,” he said.
Musk launched the “America Party” on Saturday, citing overwhelming support from a July 4 poll on X. The move follows his break with the Trump administration after criticizing the “Big Beautiful Bill” and calling for Trump’s impeachment. Tensions escalated after Musk claimed he was in Jeffrey Epstein’s files.
