Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declined to identify which countries the United States is close to finalizing trade deals with, despite having suggested earlier that announcements could come as soon as this week. During a House Financial Services Committee hearing Wednesday, Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-N.Y.) pressed Bessent to disclose the nations involved.
“It would be detrimental to the interest of the United States for me to answer that question,” Bessent responded, citing concerns about compromising ongoing negotiations.
Bessent confirmed talks with 18 major trading partners are underway and described several as “quite advanced.” He added that some agreements may reach a “principle stage” soon, with final terms being “papered over” in the following months.
He also confirmed that he and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will travel to Switzerland this weekend to begin trade negotiations with China, part of efforts to address escalating tensions and tariffs between the two countries.
