As the Democratic National Committee prepares to elect a new chair, outgoing leader Jaime Harrison says Democrats should have stuck with Joe Biden in the 2024 race. In an interview with the Associated Press, Harrison reflected on the party’s loss to President Trump, Kamala Harris’ shortened campaign, and the need for structural changes within the DNC.

Harrison argued that multiple factors contributed to Harris’ defeat, including economic concerns, the Gaza conflict, and gender biases. He noted that Harris had little time to build momentum after Biden exited the race and suggested Democrats should have defended Biden more strongly, as Republicans did for Trump.

He also criticized the DNC’s limited decision-making power, stating it should not be a “rubber stamp” for presidential campaigns. Additionally, he emphasized the need for stronger outreach to Black and Latino voters, warning against taking their support for granted.

Harrison, who has no immediate political plans, said he hopes to help rebuild the Democratic Party in the South.
