WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) announced Wednesday he will introduce articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, citing two ongoing controversies involving the Pentagon. Thanedar’s effort, which his own colleagues acknowledge faces long odds, focuses on “Signalgate” and allegations of a follow-up strike connected to an alleged Venezuelan drug boat.

According to Axios, Thanedar intends to unveil the articles Thursday morning during a rally at Union Station. His office said the charges will accuse Hegseth of “Murder and Conspiracy to Murder and Reckless and Unlawful Mishandling of Classified Information.” The rally will include FLARE, a group advocating for the impeachment of President Trump.

Democratic leaders have already downplayed the effort. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said Republicans would never permit such articles to reach the floor and argued former President Trump would block GOP cooperation. Other House Democrats told Axios the push is unlikely to gain traction, with one senior member saying Thanedar is doing it “for press.”

Impeachment has been a divisive topic for Democrats this year. While grassroots activists are pressuring lawmakers to pursue it, many members view the strategy as procedurally impossible in a Republican-controlled House.

Thanedar has previously faced criticism within his caucus for repeatedly attempting to impeach Trump.
