Texas public schools may soon incorporate Bible teachings into lessons for kindergarten through fifth grade under a new proposal from the State Board of Education. The curriculum, designed by the Texas Education Agency, includes biblical concepts like the Golden Rule and stories from Genesis. Schools could adopt the curriculum voluntarily and receive extra funding if they participate.

At a public hearing, opinions were sharply divided. Critics, like educator Megan Tessler, argued the plan undermines secular education and could alienate non-Christian students. Proponents, including Cindy Asmussen, supported it as a return to classical education values.

The proposal reflects a broader trend in states like Oklahoma and Louisiana, where officials have pursued similar initiatives. Religious experts and groups like the Texas Freedom Network criticized the curriculum’s Christian focus and lack of attention to historical issues like slavery.

The board is expected to vote on the measure Friday. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has endorsed the proposal, and lawmakers are likely to revisit related measures, such as displaying the Ten Commandments in classrooms, next year.
