Texas officials have proposed a 1,400-acre site in Starr County to support President-elect Donald Trump’s immigration plan, which includes mass deportations. Dawn Buckingham, Texas Land Commissioner, stated her office is ready to work with federal agencies like DHS, ICE, and Border Patrol to develop a facility for processing, detention, and deportation.
The land, owned by the Texas General Land Office, is located 35 miles west of McAllen and was purchased last month as part of broader border security efforts, including building a wall. Buckingham criticized her predecessor for failing to allow such measures, claiming the lack of action facilitated crimes by cartel members.
Trump recently signaled plans to declare an immigration national emergency, raising concerns among immigration advocates about the legality and logistics of deporting millions. Meanwhile, other states and cities are taking steps to protect migrants. The Los Angeles City Council passed a “sanctuary city” ordinance on Tuesday, limiting cooperation with federal detention requests for undocumented immigrants.
