Republicans in the Texas Senate have introduced a bill mandating the display of the Ten Commandments in public schools and setting aside time for students to read the Bible. Sponsored by state Sen. Phil King (R), the legislation follows Louisiana’s passage of a similar law last year.

A previous Texas Senate bill, S.B. 1515, passed along partisan lines but failed to reach a House vote in 2023. Following Louisiana’s lead, Texas lawmakers are renewing their efforts. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) pledged that such a measure would pass in the Senate.

King defended the bill, stating, “The Ten Commandments are part of our Texas and American story… Our students cry out for moral clarity.” Critics argue the proposal blurs the line between religion and public education.

Louisiana’s law, originally set for Jan. 1, is currently tied up in court and could reach the Supreme Court. With an earlier introduction this session, the Texas measure has a stronger chance of advancing. Former President Trump has praised these efforts, advocating for the Ten Commandments in schools.
