The Texas House on Thursday passed a bill requiring transgender-identifying residents on government property to use facilities that align with their biological sex, marking a breakthrough for Republicans after years of failed attempts.

Senate Bill 8 passed the chamber 86–45 and applies to public schools, universities, prisons, jails, and other taxpayer-funded buildings, as well as private facilities in family violence shelters. Violators could face fines ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 for a first offense and up to $125,000 for repeated violations.

Democrats sharply criticized the measure. State Rep. Jessica González called it “basically a vigilante potty police,” while Rep. Jolanda Jones said it empowers “vagina vigilantes” to police gender. Republicans argued the bill protects women’s privacy. “When it comes to choosing between my little girl’s safety and privacy and a grown man’s bathroom preferences, I’m going to choose my little girl every time,” said Rep. Angelia Orr.

The Senate must now approve the amended bill before it goes to Gov. Greg Abbott, who has signaled support.
