Texas state Rep. John Bucy III (D) criticized the reported use of the FBI to locate Democratic lawmakers who left the state to block a Republican-led redistricting plan. In a Thursday statement, Bucy accused Texas leadership and FBI Director Kash Patel, appointed by Donald Trump, of targeting political opposition, calling it “the tactic of a collapsing regime.”

Bucy and other Democrats, including Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu, vowed not to back down, with Bucy challenging authorities to “come and take it.” State Rep. Ann Johnson (D) called the move an “authoritarian tactic,” saying she would rather be “chased for doing what’s right than complicit in what’s wrong.”

Earlier Thursday, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) announced that the FBI had agreed to his request to help track down the absent lawmakers. Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) said both the FBI and Texas Department of Public Safety were “tracking down” the group.

Legal experts questioned whether the FBI has jurisdiction in the matter, noting it involves enforcement of Texas state law, not federal law. The FBI has not confirmed the scope of its involvement.
