Tens of thousands of Hungarians rallied in Budapest on Saturday, demanding an end to Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s 15-year rule as opposition leader Peter Magyar pledged to align Hungary more closely with Europe.
Magyar, a former government insider, leads the surging Tisza party, which now outpolls Orban’s Fidesz party ahead of the 2026 elections. Protesters waved Hungarian flags, chanting “Filthy Fidesz” and “The Tisza is flooding” as Magyar vowed to restore democracy and launch a national consultation on key economic and political issues.
Meanwhile, Orban used Hungary’s national day celebrations to ramp up his crackdown on NGOs, journalists, and politicians receiving foreign funding. He vowed to eliminate a “shadow army” allegedly backed by the United States and Brussels, targeting media groups and NGOs funded by USAID and billionaire George Soros.
The Fidesz party has also introduced constitutional changes that would allow the expulsion of dual citizens deemed a sovereignty threat, further escalating tensions ahead of the election.
