Tennessee’s GOP-controlled State House has approved legislation criminalizing adults who assist minors in receiving gender-affirming care without parental consent. The bill mirrors an “anti-abortion trafficking” proposal approved earlier, aimed at preventing adults from aiding minors in obtaining abortions without parental consent.

Governor Bill Lee, who has previously approved a sweeping abortion ban and a ban on gender-affirming care for children, is expected to sign these bills into law. Critics warn of the broad application of these laws, which could penalize actions ranging from discussing care options to assisting travel for care.

The Human Rights Campaign notes that Tennessee has enacted more anti-LGBTQ+ laws than any other state since 2015. This includes a bill banning state funding for hormone therapy or sex reassignment procedures for inmates, and a requirement for school employees to disclose transgender students to their parents. Another law allows LGBTQ+ foster children to be placed with families holding anti-LGBTQ+ beliefs. These laws represent a significant assault on the state’s LGBTQ+ community.
