Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) escalated Democratic criticism of FCC Chair Brendan Carr on Thursday, warning him to “get a lawyer” in anticipation of congressional investigations if Democrats retake the majority.
Carr has come under fire for pressuring broadcasters to remove Jimmy Kimmel Live! after the host joked about the Charlie Kirk assassination. During a podcast interview, Carr suggested affiliate licenses could be at risk if stations failed to act, comments Democrats blasted as censorship. ABC and Nexstar Media Group subsequently suspended Kimmel’s program.
“You’re going to be answering questions about the deals that you struck and who benefited and what the cost was to the American people,” Swalwell said at a hearing.
House Democratic leaders, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, also called for Carr’s resignation, accusing him of abusing power to silence critics of President Donald Trump. Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) has launched a House Oversight probe into Kimmel’s removal.
Carr, meanwhile, defended his stance, telling CNN it may be “worthwhile” to review whether ABC’s The View still qualifies for certain FCC exemptions. Democrats argue such comments confirm partisan targeting of media outlets.
