WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal authorities have arrested a suspect in the 2021 pipe bomb case that targeted the headquarters of both the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Republican National Committee (RNC), according to reports from AP News, Reuters and CNN. The long-running investigation had remained one of the most puzzling unresolved components of the Jan. 6 period.

The explosive devices were planted late on January 5, 2021 — the night before the U.S. Capitol was attacked by supporters of President Donald Trump seeking to block certification of Joe Biden’s victory. The bombs were discovered on January 6 and safely neutralized, though the FBI has said they were fully capable of causing loss of life.

For years, investigators had no identified suspect despite releasing surveillance videos showing a masked individual in a gray hoodie carrying a backpack and wearing distinctive black-gray-yellow Nike Air Max Speed Turf sneakers. In 2023, the reward for information was raised to $500,000.

The suspect was arrested Thursday morning in Virginia, according to officials cited by AP and Reuters, and is expected to appear in federal court in Washington, D.C. Specific charges have not yet been released.

The arrest marks the first major breakthrough in a case that has fueled intense speculation, conspiracy theories and widespread frustration among law enforcement. Until now, the identity of the bomber had remained one of the most significant mysteries connected to the events surrounding January 6.
