A Pew Research Center survey involving 12,693 respondents reveals a complex landscape of public opinion on Joe Biden and Donald Trump as they secure their party nominations for the 2024 presidential race. Approximately 26% of Americans express unfavorable views of both candidates, a sentiment more prevalent among younger adults and those eschewing strict partisan labels.

The survey, conducted from February 13-25, 2024, highlights that 37% of respondents favor Trump over Biden, whereas 34% prefer Biden, with a mere 2% holding favorable views of both. The “double negative” opinion, disfavoring both Biden and Trump, varies across demographic groups, with younger adults and independent or non-partisan leaners exhibiting higher rates of shared disapproval.

Republicans and Republican-leaning independents show strong support for Trump, with 72% favoring him alone. However, Republican leaners display less enthusiasm for Trump compared to party identifiers, leading to a higher percentage (35%) of “double negatives” among this group. Among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, there’s a notable divide between party identifiers and leaners, with leaners more likely to disfavor both candidates.

The survey also examines the attitudes of Republican and Republican-leaning registered voters who supported other GOP candidates, revealing that Nikki Haley’s supporters are particularly critical of both Biden and Trump, with 53% disliking both. Supporters of Ron DeSantis and Trump show varying degrees of loyalty and opposition, underscoring the fractured political landscape within the Republican base.

Overall, the favorability ratings for Biden and Trump are closely matched, with 62% and 60% of Americans viewing them unfavorably, respectively, indicating a deeply polarized electorate as the 2024 presidential election approaches.
