The Supreme Court has upheld sanctions against Sidney Powell and other attorneys affiliated with former President Donald Trump, regarding a lawsuit that challenged the 2020 election results in Michigan. The Court declined to overturn the $150,000 in penalties imposed on the seven lawyers involved, for bringing forth what was deemed an unfounded legal challenge after Joe Biden’s victory by 154,000 votes in the state. Among the sanctioned lawyers is L. Lin Wood, who has distanced himself from the case’s active litigation, stating his role was minimal.

These sanctions, payable to both the state of Michigan and the city of Detroit, cover the legal expenses incurred in defending against the lawsuit. Originally set at $175,000, the amount was reduced by a federal appeals court by approximately $25,000.

Sidney Powell, notable for her post-election public statements and legal maneuvers aimed at disputing the election outcomes, also faced legal repercussions in Georgia. In October, she admitted guilt to state charges related to attempts to overturn the election results, pleading guilty to six misdemeanors linked to conspiring to disrupt election processes. Powell’s aggressive legal strategies post-election included bold claims of unveiling significant evidence of electoral fraud, famously promising to “release the Kraken,” a statement that gained widespread attention.
