The Supreme Court declined to lift a gag order restricting President-elect Donald Trump from making statements about jurors, court staff, and their families in his New York criminal case. Justice Samuel Alito handled the denial, marking the second time this year the court has upheld the restrictions without additional comments.
The gag order, imposed by Judge Juan Merchan before Trump’s conviction on 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records in the hush money case involving Stormy Daniels, aims to protect court personnel and jurors. While some portions of the order were lifted earlier this year, Trump continues to challenge the remaining restrictions, citing First Amendment concerns.
The case has drawn comparisons to President Joe Biden’s remarks during his pardon of Hunter Biden, with Trump’s lawyers arguing similar political bias in the New York case. Trump’s sentencing, initially set for November 26, has been delayed as Merchan considers arguments about presidential immunity.
Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg is set to file a motion defending the conviction, with the possibility of sentencing resuming after Trump’s presidential term ends in 2029 if the case isn’t dismissed.
