The Supreme Court ruled 6–3 on Friday that lower courts exceeded their authority in issuing universal injunctions against President Trump’s attempt to end birthright citizenship in the United States. The ruling, authored by Justice Amy Coney Barrett, did not assess the constitutionality of Trump’s policy, but determined that district courts had overstepped.

“When a court concludes that the Executive Branch has acted unlawfully, the answer is not for the court to exceed its power, too,” Barrett wrote. The decision effectively curbs the use of nationwide injunctions, which have increasingly been used to freeze presidential policies.

Trump’s order had been blocked by every district court that reviewed it, with judges labeling it likely unconstitutional. Their rulings halted the policy entirely — a tactic the high court now says lower courts cannot deploy.

The rise of such sweeping rulings began under Obama and accelerated during Trump’s presidency, prompting bipartisan criticism. The decision reshapes how presidential policies can be challenged going forward.
