The Supreme Court ruled 6–3 on Friday to restrict lower courts’ use of nationwide injunctions, siding with President Trump’s request to begin limited enforcement of his executive order ending birthright citizenship for certain children born in the United States. Justice Amy Coney Barrett, writing for the conservative majority, said lower courts had exceeded their authority by halting the policy nationwide.

The ruling does not decide the constitutionality of Trump’s order, which denies citizenship to children born in the U.S. if their parents lack lawful status. The court said only parties in the lawsuit are protected, allowing partial enforcement elsewhere.

In dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor warned the decision threatens constitutional rights, writing, “No right is safe in the new legal regime the Court creates.”

The case stems from lawsuits by 22 states and immigrant rights groups, which argue the order violates the 14th Amendment. While legal challenges proceed, the Trump administration has 30 days to issue guidance on implementing the order.
