The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that President Donald Trump may proceed with executive actions to downsize the federal workforce, lifting lower court orders that had blocked the cuts. The unsigned order leaves intact Trump’s February directive and a memo issued by the Department of Government Efficiency and Office of Personnel Management.

The court found no specific layoffs were before it, only the broad executive order. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented, warning of sweeping consequences including mass layoffs, program cancellations, and erosion of congressional authority.

At least 75,000 federal workers have already exited through deferred resignation, with thousands more placed on leave or terminated. Agencies affected include Veterans Affairs, EPA, Social Security, and Agriculture.

White House officials hailed the decision as a win for executive authority. Labor unions and several cities warned it would destabilize essential services like food safety and veterans’ healthcare.

The case will continue in U.S. District Court, where Judge Susan Illston previously ruled the downsizing required congressional approval.
